Volume 24 Issue 6
S.O.S. On Location is an exciting summer outreach for many children as volunteers have the opportunity to go out into the neighborhoods and share the love of Christ. During the school year, the children and volunteers are used to coming to the S.O.S. Ministries Center, but during the summer volunteers get to go out into the neighborhoods and literally bring the Word of God to the streets. It is a unique opportunity as we get to share the Gospel with not only the children, but often their families as well.
On Location takes place each Monday night beginning July 10 and ending July 31 as S.O.S. Ministries takes the Gospel to the streets of Bryan. We bring crafts, snacks, engaging Bible studies and exciting games to the neighborhoods as we share the love of Christ with kids ages 5-12. Each week, the kids learn more about Jesus and more about how loved they are by the volunteers and by their Father. It is beautiful to witness them experience unconditional love and begin to trust the volunteers. In all of the activities at On-Location, the common thread is God’s love, which crosses all boundaries. The differences in age, race, and home-life seemingly disappear when spreading God’s unending love, which is completely evident in the neighborhoods at S.O.S. On Location. On Location provides a great opportunity for volunteers to build relationships with the kids and show them the depth of God’s love. The children’s hunger and thirst for such knowledge is what keeps volunteers coming back each summer. The kids are desperately seeking a hope that only comes from Jesus.
This year, the theme for On Location is “Unleashed”. Kids will be learning about the ways God’s forgiveness and love transforms us. They will learn that Jesus restores all of their brokenness and gives hope in their sufferings, and that God is good, He values them and He loves them as His own children. Because of these truths, they are unleashed to walk in the freedom of forgiveness, have hope amidst trials and
hardships, and love others because they were first loved by God. Each week, the kids will learn passages of scripture that teach them about the forgiveness, the hope, and the love of God. Our heart for them is that they will understand that when they say yes to Jesus, they are restored, transformed, and unleashed to display God’s love to others and make a difference in their communities.
This year, we would like to reach over 150 children but in order to do that, we need many volunteers to be a presence in the neighborhoods. The more volunteers that we have, the more kids we are able to reach. WORD FROM THE STREET: July 21-25 SOS is taking 60 kids to camp, thanks to a gift from the Marshall V. Ross Foundation!
FCA Camp “One”
This summer SOS Ministries was able to partner with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA, to raise scholarships in order to send a group of our teens to FCA Sports Camp at Texas A&M University. July 2nd – July 5th our teens were coached by collegiate athletes and coaches who love athletics, but more importantly, love God first. While the teens were running drills, eating, working out, scrimmaging, going to chapel or worship they were encouraged to live in ONE spirit with ONE purpose, standing together to fight for the faith. The leaders encouraged the students to truly live as citizens of heaven, conducting themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.
Through the week they referenced the verse Philippians 1:27, “Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.” FCA is a summer favorite among the athletes at SOS, and handful of our kids have continued to go every year. They are always so grateful to be able to experience FCA camp. Thank you to those who’s generosity enabled our kids to be poured into and discipled this summer!
