Volume 24 Issue 11
Every year, excited families and individuals rush to hang Christmas decorations, and holiday festivities transform the cultural landscape of America into one of hustle and bustle. While these activities make it easy to become lost in a sea of shopping and last-minute preparations during this time, they also hold the potential to offer a sweet space in our modern world to reflect on God and the work of His son.
With all the chaos this joyous season brings, it’s vital to remember the beautiful truths that are celebrated each Christmas: the hope that comes from Jesus’ birth, the redemption that awaits for God’s people, and the darkness that Christ broke through with overwhelming light. We open gifts each year as a reminder of God’s love for us, shown in the gift of Christ. Let us take the time to thank God for sending us His only Son on this blessed day!
Each year at SOS, we love to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with our extended family on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. We gear our lessons towards teaching the kids and teens all that Christmas is about, and we conclude our last nights of ministry for the year with a festive Christmas party. At this event, each child and teenager who attends SOS receives a present, given by the generous people throughout the community. For some children, this may be the only gift they receive this season; SOS also provides additional gifts to entire families who we know would go without otherwise.
With an increase in those reaching out to us with needs during this time, we have an incredible challenge and opportunity ahead of us. Each year, as we work to increase our impact in the community, we want to continue to do more than ever. We cannot accomplish our goals without the help of our generous supporters! You can help SOS support one child for a gift of $25, or you can sponsor an entire family for a gift of $100. In this newsletter, you will find a contribution slip. Through your gift, you can provide a tangible expression of God’s love to a child in the Brazos Valley this Christmas season. Thanks for joining us in the work God is doing to remind His children of His love!
DID YOU KNOW: In 2016, SOS provided Christmas gifts to over 300 children, teens and families!
Girl’s Night Sleepover
Every fall, our Children’s Ministry has a sleepover for our 3rd-5th grade girls. This month, 25 of our girls in the Children’s Ministry joined us for a Girl’s Night Sleepover. The girls participated in crazy games, a talent show where they showcased their unique talents and a Spa Night that included face masks and manicures. They also enjoyed pizza, painting and a photo booth. The night wrapped up with a dance party and a
movie. The vision for the sleepover has always been that the girls we serve would see how valued and loved they are not only by the
volunteers, but also by Jesus. We desire for them to step into all that God has called them to be and to walk in His
promises for them. Our mission is to become more personally invested in the lives of those we serve, and what better way to invest in this age group than by having a sleepover! The following Monday night, 3 of those girls decided to surrender their hearts to Jesus and accepted Him as their Lord and Savior! Thank you to Philadelphia Sisters from Texas A&M and our volunteers for helping make this night a huge success. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
